Who is Subhadra Kumari Chauhan ?

Today is the 117th birthday of the poet and freedom fighter Subhadra Kumari Chauhan. Google has dedicated its doodle to the first woman Satyagrahi Subhadra Kumari Chauhan today. In this doodle, Subhadra Kumari Chauhan’s saree is first seen with pen and paper. The doodle was created by New Zealand-based artist Prabha Mallya.

In this doodle background, on one side, there is a depiction of the poet’s famous poemJhansi Ki Rani which holds an important place in Hindi literature. On the other hand, there is a glimpse of freedom fighters.

In a statement, Google described Chauhan as a “guiding writer and freedom fighter” who “rised to the national level in an era of male dominance in literature”. Google wrote, “She is known for his constant writing and even writing while sitting on a thong on his way to school. Her first poem was published only at the age of nine. Subhadra Kumari Chauhan was a notable Hindi artist and essayist. Subhadra Kumari Chauhan born on 16 August 1904 was a widely known Indian Hindi poet and writer. Two collections of poetry and three collections of stories were published, but her fame is thanks to Rani (Poetry) of Jhansi.
She has been a conscious poet of national consciousness, but she also expressed her feelings within the story after suffering many jail tortures in the
freedom struggle.

She was born on the day of Nag Panchami, in a village named Nihalpur close to Allahabad (now Prayagraj) of Uttar Pradesh, in the landlord household of Ramnath Singh. Subhadra Kumari Chauhan had 4 sisters and two brothers. 

She started out composing poems from her childhood. Her works are full of the spirit of nationalism. Her father, Thakur Ramnath Singh, used to be a lover of education and underneath his supervision, his early schooling additionally took place.
she studied within the Crosthwaite Girls’ School in Allahabad In her childhood days and passed the middle school examination in 1919.

Subhadra Kumari Chauhan and her husband joined Mahatma Gandhi’s Non-Cooperation Movement In the year 1921. She became the first woman Satyagrahi to courtroom arrest in Nagpur and was once jailed twice for her involvement in protests against British rule in 1923 and 1942.

 She became a member of the legislative assembly of the country. She died in 1948 in a car coincidence close to Seoni M.P. on her way return to Jabalpur from Nagpur, the then capital of CP, wherein she had gone to attend the assembly session.

 

Subhadra Kumari Chauhan’s first poem was published only at the age of nine. Her Hindi poem ‘Jhansi Ki Rani‘ is very famous.
Subhadra has been a conscious writer of national consciousness.

Subhadra Kumari Chauhan gave revolutionary speeches as a part of his contribution to the freedom struggle and a total of 88 poems and 46 short stories were published.

After suffering many jail tortures in the freedom struggle, he has also expressed his feelings in the story. Subhadra Kumari Chauhan died on 15 February 1948 at the age of 44.

 

Writing Career of  Subhadra Kumari Chauhan

Bheke Moti ‘ is her first story collection. There are total 15 stories in it , Holi, Papipet, Manchlirani, Parivartan, drshtikon, kadamb ke phool, Kismat, machhuye kee betee, Ekadashi, Ahuti, Thati, Amrai anurodh, and graameen!

The language of these stories is simple. Most of the stories are focused on women. Her second collection of fiction was in the year 1934, titled ‘Unmadini’ In this, there are 9 stories in total including Unmadini, asamanjas, abhiyukt, sone kee kanthee, naaree hrday, pavitr eershya, angoothee kee khoj, chadha dimaag, and veshya kee ladakee. The main tone of all these stories is the family social scenario.

 ‘Sidhe Sadhe Chitra‘ is the third and final collection of stories by Subhadra Kumari Chauhan. There is a total of 14 stories in it. Roopa, Kailashi Nani, Bialha, Kalyani, Do sathi, Professor Mitra, Durachari, and Mangala – The plot of the 8 stories is female-dominated family social problems. The stories of Hingwala, Rahi, Tange Wala, and Gulab Singh are based on national themes.

 Subhadra Kumari Chauhan wrote a total of 46 stories and she is well-reputed in the Hindi literary world as a very popular story writer.
